TMA1170 - Master of Architecture Dissertation
Before you, lies my exploration into the perceptions of the sublime. It has been written as both, part of a larger understanding of sublimity in art history and science fiction, and as an instrument of the understanding of my design thesis which this essay precedes. The dissertation, although conventional in its written form, stands as an intellectual underpinning of the project which comes next, rather than an entity that runs directly parallel with it. I inform my project here and support the ideas behind the journey of ‘the wanderer’ in my visuals. Through this piece of writing I explain the theory behind the design with the aid of art history and science fiction. There are points where the reader can listen to my thought process, as I add a sort of commentary throughout the essay, a way to help translate the text with a version of my subconscious taking you through its underpinning. One of the elements of the sublime, is this occupation of the space in between, this residence in the furthest reaches of our imagination, but not completely out of reach. It occupies the space between knowing and not knowing, between fear and curiosity. The notion that there is a version of this dissertation which is situated in this essence of cognitive liminality, between reading and un-reading. The idea that it sits between something that is legible and illegible, mirrors the themes are the very heart of sublimity itself. The abstract version of this paper uses aesthetics as much to communicate its intentions as the meanings of the words and the construction of its sentences. In parts, it may be completely unreadable, deliberately. Phasing in and out of the texts, provoking thought, applying a greater level of intrigue. I want the viewer to be able to read through one version, and understand in part, but also (and more importantly) I would like the reader to immerse themselves in the sublime text almost simultaneously, to understand it in full. By progressing through this sublime text, the reader will observe this journey of the wanderer as he begins to question the nature of his reality, as he walks on this path of self-discovery.
